Pre-Symposium Workshops
Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP)
Monday, June 6th, 2011 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
Instructor: Ayoob Ghalami (University of Toronto)
This course reviews blood-borne pathogens and exposure control principles, practices, and requirements as mandated by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other regulations and guidelines. The course covers immunization, post-exposure prophylaxis and other emergency response measures and reporting requirements.
High Containment Certification Submission Process- What does it all mean?
Monday, June 6th, 2011 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Instructors: Cynthia Elliott (CFIA), Heather M. McRae (CFIA), Dana Scott (CFIA) and representatives from PHAC
Part 1- High Containment Certification Submission Process
-The presentation will explain the submission requirements for the certification performance and verification testing of various types of high containment laboratories.
-The presentation will outline how to optimize certification submissions by providing examples of a "good" submission which will facilitate the certification process by decreasing the need for Regulated Parties to provide additional information and clarification.
-By the completion of this section, participants will have a better understanding of the certification process, as well as, what testing and verification documentation is required to ensure a complete certification submission.
Part 2- Import Permit Application Process
- The presentation will focus on "need to know" information regarding the completion of important documentation relating to importation, including the Application for a Permit to Import, Facility Certification Form, Containment Level 2 Inspection Checklist and transfer requests, as well as, how to ensure a successful application submission.
- The presentation will also highlight tips on how to streamline your permit applications and laboratory compliance. Tips will also be given on how to reduce your paperwork, reduce the turn-around times and save money!
- By the completion of this section, participants will have a better understanding of the Regulations and requirements, the application process and the documentation required for successful application.
Part 3- "Ask the Regulators"
During this part of the session, participants will have an opportunity to "Ask the Regulators" about their individual facility and questions relating to the certification requirements and submissions as well as importation requirements and the permit application process.
Attendees are welcome to contact biocon@inspection.gc.ca with specific areas of discussion they would like covered, as well as, provide a brief overview of the type(s) of facility they have.
Target Audience:
- Canadian Regulated Parties involved in the performance and verification testing procedures or the submission process including biological safety officers, researchers, facilities management, and technical staff. The workshop will be beneficial for all facilities involved in the certification and re-certification of high containment facilities (i.e. CL3, CL4, TSE, FAD, PPC-2A, PPC-3, AQ2- in vivo and AQ3 facilities).
- Canadian Regulated Parties who submit applications for permits to import pathogens as well as biological safety officers of facilities which import pathogens.
Agriculture Pathogens: Planning, Design and Operational Strategies
Tuesday, June 7th, 2011 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
Instructors: Paul Langevin, Merrick & Company, and others to be determined
This course will give the audience current design trends, challenges and code requirements for containment facilities designed and operated as Agriculture-based animal and plant laboratories. The instructors will provide project examples, design/operational strategies and commissioning procedures to support certification.
Hazardous Occurrence Investigation and Analysis- from a Biosafety Perspective
Tuesday, June 7th, 2011 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
Instructor: Paul Langan (CFIA)
This course will give participants a chance to understand the investigation and analysis process that should be followed when a hazardous occurrence happens in their laboratory.
Session topics will include:
- Standards your laboratory OSH program should comply with- OHSAS 18001:2007 or CSA Z100
- Basic elements all your Occupational safety and health program Standard Operating Procedures (including Hazardous Occurrence & Investigation) must contain
- A multifactorial and systemic process for hazardous occurrence analysis (including CAN/CSA-Z796.98 (R2008) and International Loss Control Institute Accident Causation Method)
- Steps involved in doing a thorough investigation, analysis and reporting
- Biosafety case studies will be used
It is recommended that participants bring their companies' Hazardous Occurrence Investigation procedures and forms.
